The town of Oberhof is predestined for hiking vacations by its geographical location. In the middle of the Thuringian Forest, countless hiking trails and routes lead from Oberhof in all directions, which are ideal for day trips.
Among the most famous is certainly the Rennsteig, the most famous long-distance hiking trail in Germany. With a length of 168 km and a difference in altitude of 787 meters, it is a real challenge that takes several days to complete. The Große Beerberg represents the highest elevation on the route with 982 meters. It is suggested to complete the Rennsteig in six daily stages.
However, the region also offers hiking trails for your vacation in Thuringia that are less demanding. To the Lütschetalsperre, to name one example, the distance is about 11.5 km, which can be done in about three hours. Another highlight is the hike along the historic sports facilities.
Within four and a half kilometers you walk along the more than 100 years old winter sports history of Oberhof. Within about 3 hours you will pass the Wadeberg youth ski jump, the start of the Wadeberg bobsleigh run and the Bobsleigh House. Suggestions for hiking trails around Oberhof can also be found on the town portal or you can get them directly at the Oberhof information desk.
Cycling enjoys an ever-increasing popularity not only in the cities and on the way to work. Exploring the vacation region in Thuringia and the physical balance that takes place at the same time combine sightseeing and sport with each other - two immanent factors for many people on vacation.
With the mountain bike through the Thuringian Forest
There are many possibilities in and around Oberhof to also use the mountain bike on vacation. For trekking or mountain biking there is the already described 170 km long Rennsteig. For this, however, the necessary condition should be brought. After all, there are some meters of altitude to overcome.
Guided mountain bike tours are also offered in Oberhof. With your Oberhof Card you can take part in a guided mountain bike tour free of charge on Mondays during the cycling season. You will receive the equipment incl. bike and a short introduction before you explore the place with your guide.
At Sport Luck you can book not only bike and hiking tours, but also roller skiing and skiing courses. An advantage is the in-house rental of bicycles, which also rents pedelecs / e-bikes. With the natural pedal assistance of these electric bikes, long distances or mountains are no longer considered an obstacle.
Freeriders and downhill riders will also get their money's worth in the Thuringian Forest. Many hidden paths and trails here are hidden from the untrained eye - the best idea there is probably to ask the locals, as it is well known that the best trails are not recorded anywhere. Nevertheless, some bike parks are recommended, such as the Bikepark Silbersattel near Steinach or the Bikepark Tambach-Dietharz. As of 2018, the Bikepark Oberhof is also rideable again with a new lift system and extended trails.
In the vacation region Oberhof you will find many well signposted tours for mountain bikers, of course in all degrees of difficulty. So you have a varied vacation in Thuringia ahead of you and can discover lots of small and big wonders around the Rennsteig.
The currently booming climbing sport is now also making its way into the Thuringian Forest. Although this location is not yet as widely known as Saxon and Franconian Switzerland, there are still some climbing walls in the region worth mentioning.
Lauchagrund is a good three-quarters of an hour from Oberhof and offers about 20 climbing opportunities. Very popular is the Lauchagrund especially in the Erfurt climbing scene. Here, people climb on porphyry, a volcanic rock, but there are also climbing spots where clay slate or limestone serve as climbing rocks. Just 15 minutes away from Oberhof are the so-called 12 Apostles, which according to legend are 12 giants turned to stone. You can get more information at the tourist information office in Oberschönau. Of course, the region offers other climbing areas, which you can easily ask at your tourist information.
Various dams and flowing waters give water sports enthusiasts in the Thuringian Forest ample opportunities to realize themselves. Canoeing, fishing and diving are just a few activities that can be practiced on the waters around Oberhof.
The Lütschetalsperre, about 10 km from Oberhof, offers water sports enthusiasts enough water surface to let off steam on 14 ha. The camping site "Oberhof Camping Lütschesee", located at the edge of the reservoir, is open all year round. In summer there is a rental of rowing boats and the possibility of fishing and diving in the Lütschesee.
Oberhof has additional attractions to offer besides already mentioned leisure and sports activities. For example, discover Oberhof and its surroundings from a bird's eye view in the golf climbing park.
You want to try an adrenaline kick of a very special kind? Then guest bobsledding in Oberhof is just the thing. With up to 80 km/h the bob drives towards the valley and passes 14 curves. Here, between 3-4 Gs act on the body of the occupants.
In addition, in Schönbrunn there is the summer alternative to the already mentioned snow kiting. Kitelandboarding, a combination of all-terrain board and kite, offers the opportunity to try out kiting on land.
