At the middle Rennsteig, the popular Thuringian hiking trail leads directly past Oberhof, with the hiker moving at altitudes between 500 and 900 meters. Near Oberhof you will reach the highest mountains along the trail, with the 978 meter high Schneekopf, the second highest Rennsteig peak, or with the 983 meter high Großer Beerberg, the highest peak of the Rennsteig.

The famous Rennsteig song has long since become the secret anthem of Thuringia.
„Diesen Weg auf den Höhen bin ich oft gegangen,
Vöglein sangen Lieder,
bin ich weit in der Welt, habe ich Verlangen,
Thüringer Wald nur nach dir.„
... is the refrain of the folk song with hymn character. The Rennsteig Song is not only known on the Rennsteig. It is known throughout Thuringia. The song originated in 1951, when Herbert Roth composed the cheerful melody and Karl Müller wrote the lyrics. The very first verse spurs on every hiker on the Rennsteig:
„Ich wandre ja so gerne
am Rennsteig durch das Land,
den Beutel auf dem Rücken,
die Klampfe in der Hand.
Ich bin ein lustger Wandersmann,
so völlig unbeschwert,
mein Lied erklingt durch Busch und Tann,
das jeder gerne hört...„
This is a great way to hike happily and explore nature and heights on the Rennsteig trail around Oberhof.
